Massage at Schiphol or in the city: how frequent visitors decide where to book

People who come back to Amsterdam often end up with two maps of it. One is the airport side: the hotels by the runways, the offices at Schiphol-Oost and Schiphol-Rijk, glass buildings a short walk from a taxi rank. There is no charge for the journey out to the airport and no premium in the centre. A couple with one therapist pays EUR 360 an hour, and with a therapist each EUR 720 an hour. The building: lifts and key cards against canal stairs

Airport hotels are plain buildings to arrive at. There is a lobby, a lift that may need a key card, and a corridor. The city is more varied. Booked across that week, the two halves look different on paper even when they feel the same in the room.

An overnight of eight hours, EUR 1,250, always carries a deposit of half, wherever it is held. On the airport side it is usually booked for the last night before a late-morning flight, when the hotel is a short walk from the terminal and the booking can run until breakfast. In the city it more often falls on a Saturday, at the end of a working week with nothing planned for the Sunday. Couples and two therapists

Frequent visitors occasionally travel with a partner, and the maps treat a couple the same way they treat one guest. A couple with one therapist pays EUR 360 an hour, EUR 540 for ninety minutes and EUR 720 for two hours; with a therapist each, those become EUR 720, EUR 1,080 and EUR 1,440. A booking with two therapists always carries a deposit of half, in town as much as by the airport, so a couple's same-day request in the city still sends half ahead when two therapists are involved.

Peak dates and late hours on each map

A handful of dates change the picture on both maps at once. King's Day, Pride, the Amsterdam Dance Event, the weeks between Christmas and New Year and a large conference week each count as a peak date, and every booking on a peak date carries a deposit of half, even a returning guest's same-day hour in town. The house names the peak dates when asked. Regular visitors who know their travel falls on one tend to write earlier than usual, since the roster fills faster and the city's streets slow the journeys down.

Late hours are the other place where the maps behave alike. The window in town holds at two in the morning as it does at eight in the evening, and nothing extra is added for the hour. Out by the runways, a night booking is arranged exactly as a daytime one is, with the journey time agreed first. Changing your mind between maps

Plans move. A project meeting shifts from the business park to an office in town, and the hotel moves with it. If a booking already confirmed at an airport hotel needs to move to a city address on the same evening, say so in the thread before she sets out; the hour may change with the journey.
